I caught myself thinking about "someday" again today.
You know that place our minds like to wander?
Someday I'll finally feel caught up.
Someday life won't feel quite so busy.
Someday we'll have the house.
Someday the business will finally feel real.
Someday I'll be able to relax.
It's funny how convincing "someday" can be. It always promises that joy is just one more milestone away. One more accomplishment. One more answered prayer. One more thing checked off the list.
Before I knew it, I had spent more time imagining a future version of my life than noticing the one God has already given me today.
I don't think it's wrong to dream. I think God places dreams in our hearts for a reason. But sometimes, without even realizing it, I begin to believe that joy is waiting for me at the finish line instead of walking beside me every step of the way.
Maybe that's why I keep coming back to Psalm 118:24:
"This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."
Not the day when everything finally works out.
Not the day when every prayer has been answered.
Not the day when life feels easier.
This day.
The ordinary Tuesday.
The dishes in the sink.
The unanswered questions.
The tiny answered prayers that are so easy to overlook if I'm always looking ahead.
I wonder how many gifts I've missed because I was too busy waiting for the next season.
Maybe joy isn't something we arrive at after everything falls into place.
Maybe it's something we notice when we realize God has been faithfully walking with us the whole time.
Tonight, that's what I want to remember.
Not that I need to stop dreaming.
Just that I don't want to miss today while I'm waiting for tomorrow.
Because maybe joy was never hiding in "someday."
Maybe it has been here all along.
